Hitit Güneşi (Güneş Kursu-Rozet Panel)
The sun disc is an object considered the symbol of Hittite civilization and art. It consists of elements placed around the circular shape symbolizing the sun. Some have swaying pieces to make a sound, some have deer images symbolizing peace, and some have bird and tree figures to symbolize reproduction. It is thought to be used in religious ceremonies or among horse harnesses by being attached to the ends of wooden staffs. It is usually made of bronze. The most outstanding examples were found in Alacahöyük near Çorum. Although it has become the symbol of the Hittites, it is actually a work belonging to the Hattis, the oldest civilization of Anatolia. When the Hatti kings died, they were buried with the sun disc and similar symbols.
It is thought that it was used by astrologers to determine the positions of the stars relative to each other, and later turned into a ceremonial object when other tools were developed for this purpose. It is considered the ancestor of the "realms" , which are the symbols of sovereignty in Middle Eastern civilizations. This historical artifact, found in Çorum Alacahöyük , is used by many official and civil institutions, including the governorship and municipality, as the symbol of Çorum.
The "sun disc with deer figure", built in Ankara's Sıhhiye Square , is also a copy of a Hatti artifact found during the excavations in Alacahöyük. The Sun Disc samples from the tombs of the Hatti kings can be seen in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. (Source: Wikipedia)
